Fix Slow Home Wi-Fi Before Buying a New Router

Do not buy a new router because one speed-test number looked bad. First find where the slowdown begins: the internet connection, the router, the wireless link, or one device. Ten careful minutes can prevent a very expensive guess.

Step 1: establish the wired baseline

Connect a computer to the router with Ethernet if you can. Run two or three tests at different times and record download, upload, and latency. If the wired result is also poor, moving the router will not fix the underlying connection. Restart the modem and router once, check the service status, then contact the provider with your measurements.

Step 2: test beside the router and in the bad room

Use the same device, test service, and server for every measurement. Pause large downloads and cloud backups first. Test once over Ethernet, once beside the router, and once in the room where the problem occurs. Device capability, internet plan, network traffic, distance, and building materials can all affect the result, so treat a single reading as a clue rather than a verdict.

A good Ethernet result but poor Wi-Fi beside the router points toward the wireless settings, router, or test device. A good result beside the router and a poor one in the problem room points toward coverage or interference. Poor results everywhere justify checking the provider, modem, router, and test device before buying anything.

Step 3: move the router before changing settings

Place it high, open, and as central as the cable permits. Keep it away from metal cabinets, large appliances, mirrors, and the floor. Do one change, retest, and keep the numbers. “It feels faster” is not a measurement.

Pick the right band

2.4 GHz generally travels farther and penetrates obstacles better, but it offers less capacity and shares crowded spectrum with many devices. 5 GHz usually gives more speed at shorter range. Newer equipment may also use 6 GHz, which can offer clean, wide channels but has shorter reach and requires compatible devices. If the router combines band names, band steering may choose automatically; split names only when diagnosing a stubborn device.

Channels: measure before forcing one

Some routers reassess channels automatically; others do not do it well. In the 2.4-GHz band, overlapping channels can make manual tuning worse. Use the router’s scan or a reputable analyzer, note nearby networks, and compare before and after. Return to automatic selection if the manual choice is not consistently better.

Update deliberately

Check the manufacturer’s app or support page for firmware and the model’s support status. Do not promise yourself that a monthly restart “clears memory leaks”; a healthy router should run continuously. A restart is a diagnostic step. If it repeatedly fixes the same failure, document the pattern and investigate firmware, heat, power, or replacement.

Quick fault map

  • Slow only on one device: update it, forget and rejoin the network, and compare another device in the same place.
  • Fast nearby, slow far away: improve placement or add properly positioned coverage.
  • Good speed, calls still break: check latency, jitter, packet loss, and upstream saturation.
  • Slow every evening, including Ethernet: record times and raise the pattern with the provider.
  • One room is dead: note wall materials and test with doors open before choosing mesh or a wired access point.

When hardware is justified

Mesh helps when one router cannot cover the layout after sensible placement. A wired access point is often more stable when Ethernet is available. Replace an unsupported router, one that cannot deliver the subscribed wired speed, or hardware that repeatedly fails under a normal device load. Buy against a measured limitation, not a box promising a heroic maximum speed.
